Macclesfield Town promoted to Football League after five seasons in wilderness

MACCLESFIELD TOWN have returned to the Football League after five years in the wilderness.

The Silkmen - who have a modest budget compared to their rivals - beat Eastleigh 2-0 to be crowned National League champions against all odds.

Tyrone Marsh and Mitch Hancox got the goals to spark wild celebrations.

Town boss John Askey, 53, said: "If you said five years ago we'd still have a football club I'd be surprised, so to get through all of that is great.

"It's the best I've ever felt about winning something. It's my biggest achievement as a manager but even as a player too.

"I'd probably judge this more than anything I did in my playing days.

"We feel elated. I still don't know how I feel. I'm trying to take it all in. It's a massive achievement for the club and it shows that anybody can do it.

"You don't even think about promotion at the start of the season. You want to try and win something but you don't believe it will happen.

"Even with two minutes to go you can't take it all in. It's a fantastic achievement for the club and we're all going to enjoy it.

"The main thing for me is that every player I've had has always given everything they've got.

"I'm delighted for the supporters and all of the people who kept the club going.

"It means so much and we're going to enjoy it."
